WORSHIP:
LESSON: PENTECOST - Peter preaches
Last week we started learning about a guy named Peter. Today we will continue to learn about Peter (one of Jesus’ disciples) and what is called the day of Pentecost. Pentecost is the day that Jesus sent his helper, the Holy Spirit, to the disciples. Let’s hear more about Peter’s story and how the Holy Spirit helps him and helps us!

FAMILY CONVERSATION: PRE-K
What were Jesus’ friends waiting for in a dark room? (the special helper)
What sound did they hear? (“whoooosh” like the wind)
Then what appeared? (Flames! The Holy Spirit!)
Where did the Holy Spirit go? (it went inside them)
After the helper came, what did the disciples do? (they ran out and told people about Jesus’ rescue)
How could everybody understand Peter in their own language? (the Holy Spirit helped them)
Pray together and thank God for sending the Holy Spirit to help us be brave like Peter.
FAMILY CONVERSATION: K-6TH
In the beginning of this story, what were the disciples waiting for? (the special help Jesus was going to send; the Holy Spirit)
What did they hear right before the Holy Spirit arrived? Who can make that sound? (a whoosh of wind)
Then what separated and went onto each of them? (A flaming tongue of fire!)
Then where did the Holy Spirit go? (inside each of them)
What did they do after they were filled with the Holy Spirit? (Ran outside and began to teach people about Jesus!)
What’s one way the Holy Spirit helped Peter? (Peter was only speaking in one language, but people who spoke different languages understood him.)
Where is the Holy Spirit now? (He lives inside people who follow Jesus!)
What do we call the day when the Holy Spirit came? (Pentecost!)
Pray together and thank God for sending the Holy Spirit to help us be brave like Peter.
FAMILY challenge: Read and memorize Joshua 1:9
“This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Teach motions for Joshua 1:9 :
This is my command (pretend to hold an open book in front of you)
Be strong and courageous (hold arms up and pretend to flex muscles)
Do not be afraid or discouraged (shake your head and finger “no”)
For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go (hug yourself)
ACTIVITY: YOUNGER KIDS - FLAME HEADBAND
• Give each kid a flame (from the coloring pages below) and let them color it
• Use a glue stick to put it in the center of a strip of paper (this strip of paper(s) should be long enough to go around child’s head)
• Use a tape or a stapler to secure it around each kid’s head when he/she is finished
Lead the kids in a reenactment of the story:
• Everybody says “whoosh”
• Then point to your flame headbands and say “the Holy Spirit is here!”
• Everybody run in place and say, “Jesus loves you!” or “Jesus rescued you!” to other people in the room.
ACTIVITY: OLDER KIDS - BLOWING FLAMES
Give each kid a cardboard tube, 1 piece of red tissue paper, and 1 piece of orange tissue paper. – or color a few pieces of toilet paper red and orange
• Tell kids to cut or tear their tissue paper into thinner strips (it doesn’t really matter how big or small the strips are).
• Then tape the strips inside one end of the toilet paper roll, so that the strips are hanging out of it.
• Blow through the tube, and the “flames” will start blowing!.
